| WHAT JARED'S COACH SAYS |

|
Granbury High School played host to prospects from around the state, and nation, as kids showed up for The Old Coach Five-Star Performance Camp. While plenty of kids impressed on the day it was a regional flavor that took home most of the top honors.
Caldwell excelled at cornerback throughout the one on one competition and group pass hull. The two time Star Telegram defensive player of the week won district post season honors in 2009 and had 88 tackles for the season. Martin was hardly the only talented defensive back in attendance though. Also catching a lot of attention was Lake Worth's Curtis Shorts. The 2011 all-district athlete displayed quickness from the safety position and showed incredible instincts. Those skills helped him bring home MVP recognition in the secondary. There were several talented quarterbacks at the camp, highlighted by the day's Co-Quarterback MVP'S, Bryce Murphy and Josh Kern. Both Murphy and Kern are sophomores with two years to make an impact for college scouts. Murphy, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound gunslinger from Midlothian showed quite a bit of zip on his throws and very good technique. Murphy posted a solid 40-time of 4.65 and tied the top vertical at the camp with a 34 inch jump. Murphy competed at Trinity Christian in Cedar Hill in 2009 and returned to Midlothian at the semester. Kern, a 2012 candidate, hopes to lead San Antonio Clark's offense this season which should give him ample opportunity to show off his arm. The 6-foot-3 Kern exhibited good measurables and will make the college rounds this summer already committed to attend camps at UT, SMU, and Baylor. There was another pair of sophomore quarterbacks who were impressive on the day, Highland Park's Tyler Rentfro and Boyd's Jared Cate. Rentfro will go into spring ball looking for an opportunity to compete for the starting spot for the Scots this season. Cate has been a mainstay at The Old Coach 5 Star Camps this spring and hopes to lead Boyd back into the state championship hunt. Cate has increased his competitive edge at each camp and continues to improve.
Southake Carroll receiver coach Clayton George, one of the camp coaches, commented on Lee, "He has soft hands and runs good routes for his size. If he continues to work on his routes he will be recruited as a tight end for the next level." The other winner for the receiver MVP award was Tyler Grace's Grant Childress. Childress had a solid day with the measurables clocking the 40 in 4.56, running the pro shuttle in 3.99, and having the camp best vertical jump of 34 inches. The versatile 2012 Childress spent time on both sides of the ball lining up for defensive drills as well. Recruiting analyst C.W. Starr had this to say about Childress, "Grant is very athletic and multitalented, assets that will get him looks from colleges. His size is a slight limitation right now but he is only a sophomore with a couple of years to mature and put on some muscle mass. I like what I saw from him today." Down in the trenches, several linemen impressed including some talented underclassmen. However, in the end it there was no doubt that Fort Worth Arlington Heights' Ernest Thomas would take top offensive lineman honors. The 6-foot-2, 231-pound tackle showed impressive quickness and solid footwork. He also showed off his strength as he knocked out a camp-high 21 reps with 185 pounds on bench press.
Arlington Martin's Cameron Williams took home MVP for linebackers. The 2012 Martin showed impressive athleticism turning in a 30 inch vertical jump, 4.01 in the shuttle run, and even solid speed as he recorded a 4.65 40-time. There were a couple of running backs that drew attention, Granbury's 2013 Justice Love, who is penciled in to start for the Pirates next fall, had an impressive day. Love, who shows promise in the boxing ring as well, has great quickness and exploded in the vertical jump with a 31 inch leap. Not bad for the 5-foot-7, 166 pound freshman. Matt Callan, a three year starter for Milsap, rushed for 1100 yards in '09 and showed signs why he is being noticed by colleges. Callan clocked a 4.7 forty yard dash and turned in a 4.1 for the shuttle. Geno Pierce, owner of The Performance Course and Camp Director, commented on the depth at the camp, "There were some very talented athletes here today. This was a good group that turned in solid performances throughout the day." Pierce continued to speak to the value of the experience for the athletes, "At the end of the day these athletes walked out knowing they have competed, tested, and gain valuable experience through this camp. Each kid left with a T-shirt, a manual that gives them useful tips on techniques for testing, an individual athlete evaluation, and for some great exposure. This camp will expand on what these athletes have been taught by their coaches and we believe this is the best way we can help athletes |
